As the story goes, it was 1967 and an unnamed 24-year-old model — in the throes of a professional, personal and aesthetic reinvention — had just posed in a Los Angeles studio for a series of fashion headshots. Later, a stylist told her that requests for her images came straight from a leading fashion magazine. Excited by her emerging look, publishers and agencies had been tracking her shoots for months. The studio was coordinating her calls. The model knew none of that at the time but as she posed for a studio headshot — her dark hair cropped close, with shaggy bangs — she kept a composed expression throughout.
